A strange situation persists

From its commencement the UPA government has faced many obstacles that have even made many to get skeptical over the stability of the government. But none of them can be compared with the present one since this is really unparallel in the constitutional history of India in the last 60 years at a stretch and even can’t be compared with any crisis hitherto. A key group of partners, the self-claimed “watchdogs” have become cynical of the government’s intention over the Indo-US nuclear deal and can pull out from the government if their demands are not met. The demand is the withdrawal of the government from the contentious deal, which to the consideration of the Left will put the national interest in the backburner.

This stalemate both in and out of the government has put the UPA government in an extremely unfortunate position since its any steadfast act towards the completion of the deal may bring the downfall.  But what is most striking is the subject of national interest, which is surely at nowhere. What is more since the time is running out and the days of US President George W Bush in the office are becoming shorter the situation has become more crucial.

It is true that a section of the government is set to go on even it becomes dangerous towards the government’s stability. Meanwhile the ultimatum of the CPM General Secretary has brought the political uncertainty at the doorstep and chances of early elections are becoming brighter.

Witnessing the rapidly changing political environment Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has already asked the party workers to prepare for elections.

The Congress will definitely be determined to pursue the deal come what may. But if the Left withdraws support and the government fails to win the confidence motion there may be a general elections in this very year.
